These 3 Things Will Kill Your App

Apps are a great way to nurture your mobile audience with helpful features and notifications. At the same time, they are an extra step which some may see as a nuisance. Even if your app has the best features and user experience in the whole world, your audience will never give it a chance if you make even one of these three mistakes…


1. Bad porting from iOS to Android (and vice versa)

For example, apps originally developed for iOS, failing to work with Android’s back button or vice versa: leaning on a back button that is not available on iOS. If an iPhone user recommends your app to a Galaxy user, only for the Galaxy user to have a disappointing experience, then at best, your word-of-mouth publicity hits a dead end, and at worst, takes a turn for the negative.

iPhone users may have over half the market in Australia and the US, but Android holds 70% of the global market, and Samsung still has hundreds of millions of customers in its pocket. If you want your app to be a success, and especially if you want your business to scale, then your ports better be up to par. Otherwise, you might as well be growing a gum tree in a flower pot.

2. Paywalling Necessary Features

The point of a free trial app is to give your audience a taste of your service. That means that they still need to have a functional experience without paying a cent.

For example, if you offer a free version of an app that maps out project timelines, don’t paywall the due-date feature. This will hobble the primary function of your mobile app and a swift uninstall will follow. Instead, allow the free user to set up a single project with a single person, potentially within a limited timeframe. If they find your app helpful but want to invite other people, manage multiple projects, or set up longer timelines, then the premium version of your app is going to look a lot more tantalising.

3. Forcing mobile website visitors to use your app

Big websites like Facebook and Reddit might be able to get away with it, but even their users grumble their way through the app store. Unless you’re already a fixture in your customer’s life, they’re not going to see your “View this in our app!” pop-up as helpful, but a nuisance. And what horrible consequence could result from this? They’ll go with the option that annoys them the least. I.e. your competitors.

So how do you get website visitors to use your app? Simple: you use the website itself to convince them, and not through a pop-up. Chances are they’ve come to your website because they want to learn more about your company and services, and if your app is the service, that’s your chance. Your mobile website should always supplement your app rather than replace it.
